Shopify or Custom E-commerce Software: Which Will Pay Off in the Long Run?
As a business owner considering starting an e-commerce business, one of the first decisions will be platform selection. There are two main options: Shopify and custom software. Both have different advantages and costs. Speaking from 25 years of field experience, this choice is not only about budget but also about the business's growth strategy.
In practice, I've seen that both options can create successful businesses, but businesses that make the wrong choice can also end up paying a high price. Which one is more profitable in the long run seems like a tricky question at first, but the answer is quite clear.
Shopify: Quick Start, Defined Limits
Advantages of Shopify
Launching an e-commerce site with Shopify is fast. The initial investment is low, and no technical expertise is required. A business that has become desensitized to a cloud-based system at the beginning of the month can start with plans paying between $29 and $299 per month.
- My minimum technical requirements: There is no need to set up a server, manage security certificates, or perform backups.
- Quick setup: You can be live within 1-2 days.
- Ease of integration: Thousands of plugins and payment methods are already connected.
- Security and compliance: Shopify manages requirements such as PCI-DSS and GDPR.
Shopify's Hidden Costs
However, the fee isn't just for subscriptions. While Shopify seems cheap at first, its costs start to increase as it grows. Here are the actual figures I've seen:
- Transaction fees: A fee of 1.6-2.9% plus a fixed fee is charged on each sale. A store with annual sales of 100,000 TL might pay 3,000-4,000 TL with these fees.
- Themes and customizations: Professional design costs between $500 and $2,000. You'll need to hire a developer to add custom features.
- Add-on (app) fees: An inventory tracking system costs $20/month, advanced reporting costs $15/month. If you use five or six add-ons, it will cost an extra $100+ per month.
- Data migration and dependencies: When you want to leave Shopify, your customer data and order history can be migrated in a limited way. There are API limitations.
After 5 years, the total cost of a Shopify store, including technical support, could be around $50,000-$80,000. However, your control is limited; when the platform sets rules, you have to follow them.
Custom E-commerce Software: Large Investment, Complete Control
Advantages of Custom Software
Custom software development has a high initial cost. In the Alanya and Antalya region, a medium-sized e-commerce site can cost between $10,000 and $30,000. But you will get your money's worth.
- Complete control: The code is yours. It can be perfectly tailored to your business needs.
- Legacy library and APIs: Custom bank integrations, automatic compatibility with supplier systems, direct connection to the customer management system.
- Scalability: As your business grows, the system grows with you. As company functions change, the software changes.
- Cost advantage (in the long run): The cost of a fixed server remains the same even if billions of transactions are processed.
Challenges of Custom Software
To put it more clearly: if you choose the wrong developer or the project is poorly managed, it can be disastrous.
- Quality dependency: Developer quality is crucial. Finding replacement developers can be difficult, and if the previous code was poor, you may need to rewrite it from scratch.
- Monthly maintenance cost: You will need to pay 500-2,000 TL per month for security updates, bug fixes, and minor feature additions. The maintenance contract should clearly define what it covers and what it doesn't .
- Server management: VPS or cloud server costs 100-500 TL per month. If we make the wrong decision about shared hosting, the site will slow down and we will lose money .
- Start time: Setup may take 2-3 months. This is a problem if you're in a hurry.
Calculate Long-Term Costs
Let's compare two options for the first 3 years of your business:
Shopify Scenario (monthly sales of 500 TL):
- Subscription: $29/month = $1,044 for 3 years
- Transaction fee: $1,200
- Plugins and themes: $1,500
- Total: approximately $3,700 (12,000 TL)
Custom Software Scenario (monthly sales of 500 TL):
- Development: $15,000
- Server: 3 years, $5,400
- Maintenance: $18,000 for 3 years
- Total: approximately $38,000 (125,000 TL)
At first glance, Shopify seems profitable. But that counts: if annual sales reach $50,000, transaction fees will rise to $12,000+. Looking at it 10 years from now, it's very rare for Shopify to become competitive.
Which one is suitable for whom?
Choose Shopify if:
- If you're just starting out and want to do a quick test.
- If sales volume remains low and stable.
- If you are a business that has difficulty finding technical support.
- If you don't find switching platforms expensive.
Choose custom software if:
- If you don't expect significant growth within 3 years.
- If you have specific business processes (accounting integration, supplier management, etc.).
- If you want to be independent in the long run.
- If you can find the right developer. (We also do this work in Alanya and Antalya. You can review the projects done by Alanya IT Services and check out successful e-commerce examples on our Instagram page .)
Conclusion: Long-term profitability depends on choices.
You can earn with Shopify, but with a more limited profit margin. You can earn with custom software, but you'll need to invest more money upfront.
My observation: for businesses aiming for $50,000 in annual sales, custom software pays for itself in 5 years. Shopify is still more economical if it's only targeting $10,000-$20,000 in sales.
The most important advice: talk to an experienced technical consultant before making a decision. Because a wrong decision can be very costly for your business.
